MASSACHUSETTS RELIGION BILL
January 24, 2006
Mitt Romney, the governor of Massachusetts, said Monday he is likely to oppose a controversial bill that would require religious organizations in the state that have $500,000 or more in annual revenue to file financial reports and a list of real-estate holdings each year, reports The Boston Globe. The Catholic Archdiocese of Boston and other opponents of the effort argue it violates religious freedoms. Supporters of the legislation include many lay Catholics who want to know more information about the Boston Archdiocese after the scandal over sexual abuse by clergy members.
