Md. Science Education Group Folds After 27 Years
June 1, 2007
Unable to compete with a new generation of after-school groups, the Maryland-based Hands On Science will shut down after 27 years, reports The Washington Post.
In the early 1990s, Hands On ran up to 4,000 eight-week sessions per year at elementary schools in 40 states, serving 40,000 students annually for as little as $15 per session.
However, unlike other after-school groups, Hands On could not prove that its informal science projects — separating salt and pepper using electricity, for example — improved children’s test scores at schools.
