January 18, 2007
The Wellcome Trust, in England, plans to spend about $178-million on research into obesity, cancer, and drug-resistant infections, reports Bloomberg news.
The fund’s Seeding Drug Discovery program will focus on early-stage research. Professor Steve Bloom, a researcher at University College London and a Wellcome Trust grant recipient, says obesity kills 1,000 people each day in the United States and more than 1,000 each week in Britain.
“Fat children turn into fat adults, so we have a real problem that’s going to hit us in the future,’‘ Mr. Bloom says.
