Medical-Research Project Wins $25-Million; Other New Gifts

Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, and University Hospitals of Cleveland have received a donation of $25-million from Bert L. Wolstein, founder of Developers Diversified Realty Corporation, in Cleveland, and his wife, Iris. The gift is earmarked for a biomedical-research project to be carried out jointly by both institutions, and for construction of a new building that will house the project.

Other recent gifts:

Bucks County Civil War Round Table (Doylestown, Pa.): $1.5-million bequest from Frederick Holzwarth, of Richboro, Pa., who was a retired high-school teacher and charter member of this local organization for people interested in the Civil War.

Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (Hollywood, Fla.): $1.1-million bequest from Richard H. Kline, who owned a pet and garden store in Coconut Creek, Fla., for diabetes research.

Johns Hopkins U. (Baltimore): $2-million from Dana Broccoli, of Beverly Hills, Calif., to endow a chair in oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mrs. Broccoli’s late husband, Albert, produced many of the James Bond films.


Marmion Academy (Aurora, Ill.): Real estate valued at $1-million from Vivienne Regole and her husband, Edward, an alumnus, both of St. Charles, Ill., to reconstruct the swimming pool at this high school for boys.

Miami U. (Oxford, Ohio): $5-million from Harry T. Wilks, of Hamilton, Ohio, a retired lawyer and businessman, to create a leadership institute.

National Yiddish Book Center (Amherst, Mass.): $1-million from Ruthe B. Cowl, of Laredo, Tex., to establish a center on Yiddish culture and Jewish identity. Mrs. Cowl and her late husband, Jack, owned Cowl’s Music Center, in Laredo.

Saint John’s U. (Collegeville, Minn.): $5-million from Dan Whalen, an alumnus and founder of Whalen and Company, in Oakland, Calif., and his wife, Katherine, for the annual fund, fellowships and scholarships, and to endow a chair in political science.

Salve Regina U. (Newport, R.I.): $5-million from David Wallace, an alumnus and chairman of the Putnam Trust, in Greenwich, Conn., and his wife, Jean, for the capital campaign.


U. of Arkansas at Fayetteville: $1-million pledge from Sylvia G. Swartz, of Fayetteville, to endow a chair in political science at the College of Arts and Sciences.

U. of Miami (Coral Gables, Fla.): $5-million from Christine Lynn, chief executive officer and chairman of the Lynn Insurance Group, in Boca Raton, Fla., to support research programs in paralysis and pelvic trauma at the School of Medicine; and $1.25-million from Jorge M. Perez, founder and chief executive officer of the Related Group of Florida, a real-estate development company in Miami, for capital improvements to the School of Architecture.

Western State College of Colorado (Gunnison): $1-million from John E. Brach, of Grand Junction, Colo., an alumnus and retired teacher, to purchase books and other resources on the history of the American West.
