Mellon Fund President to Depart; Greater Texas Foundation Gets New CEO

Earl Lewis, president of the $6.2 billion foundation, will resign in March after five years at the helm. He plans to create a new institute, the Center for Social Solutions, that will focus on three areas of concern: race and diversity, water, and the future of work.

Also at the Mellon Foundation, Dianne S. Harris will become a senior program officer in higher education and scholarship in the humanities on November 1. Ms. Harris is currently dean of the College of Humanities and a history professor at the University of Utah.

DataArts

Caralyn Spector will serve as the organization’s interim president and chief executive officer, effective October 9.

Ms. Spector joined DataArts — which compiles in-depth data about arts, culture, and humanities nonprofits — as chief operating officer in July. Previously, she was senior adviser to the chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Greater Texas Foundation

Sue McMillin has been appointed president and chief executive of this higher-education grant maker, which reported nearly $321 million in assets last year. She most recently served as principal and managing consultant for Iolite Consulting Services, and earlier spent a decade leading the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation.


The Health Trust

Michele Lew, local government and community relations director at Stanford Health Care, was named chief executive.

Texas Charter Schools Association

Chuck Cook, chief executive of ResponsiveEd, has been appointed interim executive director, beginning November 1. During his tenure, he will continue to serve as CEO of ResponsiveEd, the charter school company he founded in 1999.

Personnel Moves at Foundations

Carla Bryant, former chief of the early education department in the San Francisco Unified School District, has joined the Kenneth Rainin Foundation as director of education strategy and ventures.

Franklin Cumberbatch, project manager at Bader Philanthropies, was promoted to the newly created role of vice president for engagement.

Mac Howison will join the Heinz Endowments as program officer for creative learning, a newly created position. He previously served as senior program officer for catalytic funding at the Sprout Fund.


Diana L. Kostas, director of operations and strategic projects consultant at the Turrell Fund, has joined the F.M. Kirby Foundation, in Morristown, N.J., as treasurer and secretary.

Other Notable Appointments

Marc Archambault, president of the Western Kentucky University Foundation, will join Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on November 2 as senior vice president of development and alumni relations.

Tracy Church, senior director of development at the Children’s Hospital Foundation of the Children’s National Health System, will serve as the executive director of development and alumni relations at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Virginia Clark, assistant secretary for advancement of the Smithsonian Institution, has become vice president for external relations at the National Constitution Center, serving as its chief development officer.

Sharon Wilson Géno, senior vice president for legal affairs at Volunteers of America, has been promoted to executive vice president for national services and chief operating officer.


Carla Mattern, development director at the PACE Center for Girls, was hired as director of philanthropy at the Suncoast Hospice Foundation.

Jeffrey M. Schanz, assistant vice president for alumni relations and executive director of the Rensselaer Alumni Association at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been named vice president of institutional advancement at Albany Law School.

Departures

Muhammed A. Chaudhry, founding president and chief executive of the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, has resigned after 16 years at the helm. Manny Barbara, vice president for advocacy and thought leadership, has been named interim CEO.

Knox Singleton, the chief executive of Inova Health System, a community hospital system in Fairfax, Va., intends to step down from his post in July 2018.

Legacies

Christopher Angus Wurtele, the former CEO of the paint company Valspar and a major donor to the arts, died on September 3 at age 83. He and his wife, Margaret, gave $20 million to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 2015, as well as a multimillion-dollar gift to the Yale University Art Gallery in 2014.
