Melvin Galloway Tapped as COO of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Melvin Galloway will be the $11.9 billion foundation’s next chief operating officer. Most recently he was executive vice president and chief operating officer at Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

Sesame Workshop

Steve Youngwood, chief operating officer and president of its Media and Education Division, has been promoted to CEO, effective January 1.

He will succeed Jeffrey Dunn, who has been president and CEO since 2014. Dunn will remain with the children’s education group as executive chairman until his retirement on June 30, 2021.

Visa Foundation

Najada Kumbuli is now head of investments, where she will help direct private market capital to support the Visa Foundation’s Equitable Access Initiative. Most recently she was investment director at Calvert Impact Capital.


More New CEOs

Seemee Ali, professor emerita at Carthage College, has been selected as president of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture.

Erin Arnheim, chief operating officer at the Legacy Collective, has been promoted to CEO. Donors make small monthly gifts to this organization, which then solicits from their community nominations of charities that will receive grants.

Benjamin Engel has been tapped as CEO of the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation. He most recently was chief development officer at the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Jimmy Monaghan, pastor of care and mission for the Las Vegas’ Canyon Ridge Christian Church, will now serve as executive director of Olive Crest’s programs in Nevada. This foster-care agency offers housing, counseling, and education services for at-risk youths and parents.

Sophia Murphy is now executive director of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. She started worked there in 1997, first as a policy officer working on trade before directing the trade program from 2000 to 2006 and then as a senior adviser until 2018. Most recently, she was a specialist on agriculture, trade, and investment in the economic law and policy program at the International Institute for Sustainable Development.

Douglas O’Dell has been named executive director of Bethany House, a nonprofit provider of shelter and support services for women and children experiencing homelessness in New York’s Nassau County. Most recently he was executive director of the SCO Family of Services until 2019.


Adeola (Ola) Whitney, chief regional officer at iMentor, has returned to Reading Partners as CEO. She previously worked there from 2013 to 2016 as vice president of regional operations and then chief regional operations officer.

Other Notable Appointments

Monica Delisa, vice president for university advancement at Georgia College and State University, has been named vice president for development at the University of South Carolina.

Julee Farley, chief compliance officer at Alaska Permanent Capital Management, has been named vice president of finance and administration at the Rasmuson Foundation.

Beth Gaffney has joined the National Comprehensive Cancer Network as vice president of U.S. and global business development. Most recently she was head of business development for risk management and patient-support services at United Biosource Corporation.

Debi Gillette, research strategist at the Brookfield Zoo, has been appointed manager of donor advising at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum. In addition, Beryl Simpson has joined the museum as donor-relations specialist. Previously she was development administrator at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.

Katrina McCree has been named chief community-impact officer at Neighborhood Service Organization. Previously she was associate administrator of operations at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital.


Rosalyn Merrick, director of strategy and stakeholder engagement at the Georgia Community Foundation, will become chief development officer at the Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, starting November 30.

Cheryl Pemberton-Graves, director of volunteer resources at Lighthouse Guild, was promoted to chief volunteer officer.

Johnny Pryor will join the Lilly Endowment as a program director in its education division, effective January 4. Currently he is assistant vice chancellor in the division of student affairs at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. (The Lilly Endowment is a financial supporter of the Chronicle.)

Kenneth Robertson, chief financial officer at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, will now also serve as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Glo Ross, a senior analyst on federal environmental policy at the U.S. Government Accountability Office, will now be the U.S. social-justice program officer at the Arcus Foundation.

Andrea McDaniel Smith, who leads CarterBaldwin Executive Search’s office in Washington, D.C., has become a partner of this firm, which focuses on social-enterprise, public-policy, and nonprofit groups worldwide.

Thomas Sullivan has joined the fundraising consulting firm Graham-Pelton as a senior adviser for its client base of health care and higher-education institutions. Most recently he was chief philanthropy officer and vice president at the University of Maryland at Baltimore and president of the UMB Foundation.


Pamela Taylor, vice president of strategic partnerships at Common Threads, will now be chief communications and marketing officer at Share Our Strength.

Heather Winters, a licensed mental-health counselor and division director of children’s behavioral-health and helpline services, has been promoted to chief programs officer at Jewish Community Services of South Florida.
