Approaching Foundations: Suggestions and Insights for Fundraisers, edited by Sandra A. Glass, contains practical suggestions for experienced and new fund raisers about how to raise money from foundations more effectively. Development professionals wrote the chapters, which discuss how to prepare and submit applications and what actions to take before submitting grant requests. In the first chapter, James C. Murphy, president of Murphy & Associates, suggests that new and old charities should take time to determine their strengths and priorities before embarking on foundation fund raising. Other chapters discuss working with family foundations, international foundations, and corporations; securing money for medical research and health-care programs; forming collaborations with other nonprofit groups; the importance of institutional planning for colleges and universities; and how technology and the increasing number of young millionaires could affect future foundation fund raising. This volume is part of the series New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Ms. Glass is a philanthropy consultant specializing in university, college, and nonprofit fund raising.
