Miami Charities Face Increased Competition
December 4, 2006
Miami-Dade County has added nearly 1,700 nonprofit groups since 1999, a 30 percent jump, causing intense competition for private funds, which have not kept pace, reports The Miami Herald.
Hospitals, healthcare providers, and other human-service organizations account for over 1,000 of the new nonprofit groups. Officials at those groups said there was an increasing demand for their services, especially in areas not filled by businesses and government.
Yet as the number of organizations has increased, many federal and state grants have dwindled or disappeared, meaning charities face fierce competition for private money, the newspaper reports.
