Mich. Nonprofits Win Block of Charity-Poker Limits

June 2, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

A Michigan court granted a preliminary injunction Friday blocking new state regulations on nonprofit groups’ gambling fundraisers that were set to take effect the next day, reports the Detroit Free Press.

The Michigan Charitable Gaming Association and a group of nonprofits and businesses involved in charity gaming filed suit last week against the rules, which include limiting how often charity poker rooms can operate from seven days a week to four. The plaintiffs contend the restrictions will have a major impact on charities’ fundraising abilities.

A spokeswoman for the association said it hopes the order by the Michigan Court of Claims will bring Gov. Rick Snyder’s administration to negotiate changes in the regulations. State officials have made several attempts in recent months to tighten restrictions on charity gaming, which has become a multimillion-dollar industry.
