Michigan Sees Foundation Growth

The state of Michigan now has 1,468 foundations — 257 more than it did two years ago, according to the new edition of The Michigan Foundation Directory.

The state’s foundations awarded more than $1.1-billion in grants during their most recent reporting year, up from $860-million in 1997, when the Council of Michigan Foundations published the previous edition of the directory. Collectively, the state’s foundations hold more than $17-billion in assets, according to the new directory.

The W. K. Kellogg Foundation, in Battle Creek, is the state’s largest foundation, with $6.4-billion in assets. It awarded $319-million in new grants in the 1997-1998 fiscal year.

The number of Michigan foundations that award more than $50,000 in grants each year increased from 485 to 580.
