Ministers Question D.C. Center’s Status

March 8, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

A group of Ohio clergy members has asked the Internal Revenue Service to review whether the C Street Center, in Washington, continues to qualify as a church.

The C Street Center, which provides housing for members of Congress, got recent attention after South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted to an extramarital affair and said he sought counseling at the center’s townhouse.

“We are concerned that an exclusive residential club for powerful officials may be masquerading as a church,” wrote the Ohio clergy members, known as Clergy Voice. Officials of the C Street Center could not be reached for comment.
