Minn. Lawmaker Proposes Moratorium on State Grants to Charities
January 26, 2007
A Minnesota lawmaker has proposed that the state stop making grants to nonprofit groups until it builds a better system to monitor how the money has been used, reports the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
“Until state agencies enact better controls and procedural safeguards,” said State Rep. Chris DeLaForest, Republican of Andover, “the only responsible course of action is to enact a moratorium.”
A report by state government officials released this month found that Minnesota has a “fragmented and inconsistent” method of tracking grants made to charities.
