Minn. Orchestra Rehires Conductor Who Quit During Lockout

April 28, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Minnesota Orchestra’s board voted Thursday to bring back Osmo Vanska as music director, six months after the Finnish conductor resigned amid the ensemble’s bitter labor fight, the Star Tribune writes.

Under a two-year contract, Mr. Vanska will take the same 15-percent pay cut to which the orchestra’s musicians agreed in January, ending a lockout that silenced the symphony for 16 months. He was paid $1.176 million in 2012, according to tax records.

Mr. Vanska will formally return on May 1. His reinstatement, supported by musicians, was held up by tension between the conductor and Michael Henson, the orchestra’s president and CEO through the labor strife. A divided board last month approved a negotiated deal for Mr. Henson to depart in August.
