Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will receive a joint gift of $100-million to conduct research into the genetic origin of schizophrenia, bipolar depression, and other psychiatric illnesses, announces the Broad Institute, a center run by the universities.

The Stanley Medical Research Institute, which specializes in psychiatric disorders, donated the money to support the new center—to be named after Ted Stanley, the founder—over 10 years.

In addition to investigating the genetic basis of mental illnesses, the new center will screen chemicals in a search for novel modes of treatment. Edward Scolnick, who founded the Broad’s Psychiatric Disease Initiative, will direct the center.
