Winners of Graphic-Design Competition for Museum Publications
have been recognized for excellence in graphic design in the 19th annual Museum Publications Design Competition.
The contest, which is sponsored by the American Association of Museums, drew 1,221 entries this year from institutions of all sizes. Categories in which winners were announced include annual reports, exhibition catalogues, invitations to events, newsletters, and posters.
Two sets of prizes were awarded: one for groups with operating budgets of at least $500,000 and one for groups with smaller budgets. The winners were picked by two panels of judges who were chosen for their experience in publishing for arts organizations.
This year’s winners include a press kit sent by the Denver Museum of Natural History to local press organizations. The packet, which contained an invitation to view an exhibition on the science of solving crimes, was bound together with bright yellow “crime scene” tape and promised several enticements, from “mysterious refreshments” to the opportunity to “crawl through a huge gun barrel.” The resulting press coverage helped to draw large crowds to the exhibition.
