Muslim activists plan to protest the Wachovia Corporation because it closed the accounts of a Muslim charity in Herndon, Va., and offered no explanation about why it did so, reports The Washington Post.
Margaret Farchtchi, treasurer of the Muslim charity, the Foundation for Appropriate and Immediate Temporary Help, said she believes the accounts were closed due to a $150,000 donation the charity received in April 2005 from a Muslim businessman, M. Yaqub Mirza. Although Mr. Mirza’s Northern Virginia home and offices were raided by federal agents in 2002, he has not been charged with a crime.
Wachovia would not comment on the Muslim charity’s concerns, saying that the company has a “long-standing policy not to comment on customer relationships.”
