Muslim Charity Sues to Dismiss Charges

The Holy Land Foundation, one of the charities designated by the United States government as terrorist supporters, sued this week for dismissal of more than half of the 42 charges lodged against it, reports The New York Times.
Holy Land, in Richardson, Tex., is the largest of the six charities listed as terrorist supporters since December 2001; the Treasury Department has shut them down and seized their assets, often citing “secret evidence” that is not used in court. Several of the groups do not have criminal charges filed against them.
The government contends that Holy Land raised funds for Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist group. Critics say that the means and process of declaring individuals or groups as terrorist supporters is vague and secretive and unfairly targets only Muslim charities.
