NAACP President Resigns, Citing a Conflict With Trustees

March 5, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

Citing conflicts with the organization’s board over its mission and his management, NAACP President Bruce S. Gordon resigned after 19 months leading the charity, reports the Associated Press.

“‘I don’t view this as I’m right and they’re wrong,” Mr. Gordon told the wire service. “I view this as I see things one way and they see things a different way.’‘

Julian Bond, chairman of the board, said the outgoing president had many great qualities, and he was disappointed that Mr. Gordon chose to leave.

The news service said that Mr. Gordon will leave his post before month’s end, and his interim replacement is Dennis C. Hayes, NAACP’s general counsel.

Board members at the organization, who had unanimously selected Mr. Gordon, tell The Sun, in Baltimore, NAACP’s home city, they were shocked at the news of his departure.

In an article in the Los Angeles Times, Mr. Gordon complained about the organization’s focus.

“To be totally reliant on what the government does for us, instead of also doing for ourselves what we have the capacity to do for ourselves, is, to me, too narrow a focus,” Mr. Gordon tells the Times.
