To better coordinate the activities of all the charities supported by its drivers, owners, tracks and sponsors, NASCAR has established its own foundation, reports The Miami Herald. The foundation will be based in Charlotte and led by Sandy Marshall, who has served as NASCAR’s senior manager for community relations for the past three years. According to NASCAR publicist Kerry Tharp, the foundation’s long-term goal is to establish an endowment that would allow NASCAR to swiftly support relief efforts in the event of national emergencies. NASCAR has received criticism from within the racing community for not responding quickly enough with a large donation to aid Hurricane Katrina relief efforts last year.
