Japanese charities will create a nationwide nonprofit organization to provide services to homeless people and encourage the country’s government to do more to help people, reports Kyodo News.
About 18,500 people in Japan are without homes, though that number has decreased by about 6,700 since 2003, according to a survey by the nation’s Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. The organizations say they have found that a wider scope and nationwide reach of support services are necessary to keep formerly homeless people off the streets.
Groups in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture will work together with about 30 organizations to share information and collaborate on proposals sent to the government.
