NEA Site Posts Case Studies of Arts Groups’ Planning

July 29, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

Examples of how arts groups have used long-term planning to improve their operations are now available on line.

The National Endowment for the Arts has posted 26 case studies to its Web site, “Lessons Learned: A Planning Toolsite.”

Often written by the groups’ leaders, the studies look at how arts groups in different disciplines — dance, folk arts, literature, music, theater, and visual arts — have coped with fund-raising and management issues. For example, Michael M. Kaiser, former executive director of the American Ballet Theatre, explains how the ballet company erased a $5-million deficit, and Deborah Edward, executive director of the Austin Children’s Museum, details the museum’s struggle to integrate evaluation activities into its programs.

The N.E.A. plans to bring the total number of case studies to 40 by the end of the summer.
