November 1, 2017 | Read Time: 1 minute

Title: Exponent Philanthropy Pulse Check

Organization: Exponent Philanthropy

Summary: The survey found that 45 percent of experienced donors plan to give more money this year than they did in 2016. They prefer to give to nonprofits to which they are already connected, with under 3 percent indicating they would give to charities they had not previously supported.

Exponent Philanthropy is a membership organization of small grant makers and family foundations with few or no staff members. It surveyed 480 of its members for the report.

Among the findings:

  • A third said they expect to give at least half of their yearly charitable donations during the last two months of the year.
  • 27 percent said they plan to give 26 percent to 50 percent of their yearly giving in November and December.
  • 43 percent cited community needs as the top factor in their 2017 giving decisions, while 31 percent cited market performance.
  • Only 19 percent said the political or regulatory environment played a role.
