New Awards to Spur Corporate Giving

March 25, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Dayton Hudson Foundation, in Minneapolis, has created a new awards program designed to encourage corporations to step up their philanthropy.

Each year, the foundation will make awards to:

* A corporation “that has demonstrated community involvement of outstanding effectiveness, creativity, consistency, and initiative through giving and volunteerism.”

* A non-profit group “that has demonstrated outstanding creativity and effectiveness in partnering with business to benefit the community.”

* An individual or partnership “that has demonstrated exemplary involvement in philanthropy.”

All three award recipients will receive $100,000 from Dayton Hudson to be donated to charitable programs chosen by the winners.

The foundation created the awards, which are co-sponsored by the Council on Foundations, because of a concern that companies’ involvement in philanthropy has not grown in proportion to increases in profits.

“The tide is going in the wrong direction,” said Chris Park, director of the Dayton Hudson Foundation.
