New CEO Takes the Reins at Best Friends Animal Society

Julie Castle has become CEO of this national animal-rescue group working to end euthanasia in pet shelters. Most recently, she served as executive director of charity’s No More Homeless Pets program in Utah and led community programs nationally for the No More Homeless Pets Network. She succeeds her husband, Gregory Castle, who is stepping aside after nine years as CEO.
Omidyar Network
Mike Kubzansky, who has led the foundation’s intellectual-capital function since 2013, has been promoted to managing partner for the philanthropic investment firm at the Omidyar Network, overseeing $463 million in assets. He will succeed Matt Bannick, who is stepping down after 11 years in the role and will continue to serve on the firm’s Board of Directors.
Teagle Foundation
Andrew Delbanco, a professor of American studies at Columbia University since 1985, has been selected as president of the foundation. He will take over in July, succeeding Judith Shapiro, who is retiring.
More New CEOs
Jacquelyn Bode has become executive director of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation. Previously she was executive director and senior development manager at the Christian Hospital Foundation in St. Louis.
Meri-Margaret Deoudes, president and CEO of EarthShare, has been named president and CEO of the National Environmental Education Foundation. She follows Diane Wood, who is retiring.
Tonya Gollotte, associate vice president for advancement at the University of Mobile, has been named executive director of the newly created University of Mobile Foundation.
Allie Olson, national director of corporate partnerships at Reading Partners, has become executive director of the Lift office in Los Angeles. Read our March cover story about Lift, a national anti-poverty organization that helps poor parents and caregivers improve their confidence, community connections, and financial stability.
Amanda Tinkler, interim executive director at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation since November, has been appointed to the post on a permanent basis. Before that, she was director of development.
Marianna Tu, chief operating officer at America Needs You, has been promoted to CEO of this charity, which helps prepare first-generation college students for higher education. She succeeds Kimberly Harris, who is stepping down after five years.
David Willis, a pediatrician whose Oregon practice focuses on early-childhood development and family therapy, has been named the first executive director of the Perigee Fund. Founded last year, it makes grants for the healthy social and emotional development of young children.
Mike Wilson has been promoted to executive director of the Yellow Ribbon Fund. Mr. Wilson joined this charity, which assists wounded veterans, as director of operations last August and was promoted to deputy executive director in September.
Monica Woodson, managing director at Strategy in Action Management Consulting, has been tapped as chief executive officer of Albany Park Community Center, in Chicago.
Other Notable Appointments
Sarah Bauder been named chief transformation officer at the Society for Human Resource Management. Ms. Bauder came from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she was a senior program officer working on affordable postsecondary education.
Erin Bowley, program officer for the Anne Ray Charitable Trust at the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies, has been promoted to program director for the foundation’s quality of life grant-making priority.
Christine Heenan has joined the Rockefeller Foundation as vice president for policy, partnerships, and communications. Most recently, she was the president and founder of Clarendon Group and the former vice president for public affairs and communications at Harvard University.
Robert Lane, vice president for development and external relations at Phelps Hospital, has been selected as chief development officer at Blythedale Children’s Hospital.
Sarah McGee, acting executive director for policy and government affairs since September, has been promoted to chief policy and government affairs officer at the Nurse-Family Partnership’s National Service Office.
Kristen Mekemson, assistant vice president of development and campaign director for Lawrence University, is joining the Greater Milwaukee Foundation as vice president for development and philanthropic services.
Donna Munchel, grant process manager and executive assistant at the Ball Brothers Foundation, has been promoted to the dual position of program officer and grants manager.
Joshua Rednik, president and CEO of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, has been named chief development officer for Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, as it embarks on a $91 million capital campaign.
Kristin Robinson, vice president for institutional advancement at the Aspen Institute, has been named vice president for institutional advancement at Equal Justice Works.
Departures
Greg Moore, founder of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, will be stepping down as president and CEO to take on a new role as special-projects adviser early next year. A successor has not yet been named.
Peter Reiling, executive vice president for leadership and seminars at the Aspen Institute, has stepped down after 14 years in the role. David Langstaff, the longtime moderator of the Aspen Institute’s Executive Seminar, will replace him on an interim basis.
Legacies
Peter Peterson, the billionaire financier and co-founder of the Blackstone Group, died on March 20. He was 91. In 2007, he took the Blackstone Group public and then plowed $1 billion from the sale of his stock into the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which makes grants to educational and publicity campaigns on America’s federal debt.
