March 26, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Foundation Center has issued the 1998 edition of The Foundation Directory, which provides information on 8,642 foundations.

Of the 1,021 foundations never previously listed in the directory, the biggest is the California Endowment, in Woodland Hills, which was created after Blue Cross of California gave up its non-profit status. With almost $1.3-billion in assets, it placed No. 23 on the list of the wealthiest grant makers.

Together, the foundations listed in the directory have more than $247-billion in assets and give more than $12-billion per year.

Copies are available from the Foundation Center, 79 Fifth Avenue, New York 10003; (212) 807-3690 or (800) 424-9836. An order form is also available on the center’s Web site, http://fdncenter.org. The price is $185 in paperback and $215 in hardcover, plus $4.50 for postage and handling.
