New Foundation Launches Search for Obama Library Site

February 3, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The first concrete steps toward building the Obama presidential library and museum were taken Friday with the formation of a nonprofit organization to raise funds and oversee the project, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Barack H. Obama Foundation will be led by a trio of close associates of Mr. Obama who have quietly been laying the groundwork for the project since the summer. The organization will launch a competitive site-selection process in May, with the president and first lady making a final choice early in 2015.

Three Chicago universities as well as Columbia University in New York and the University of Hawaii are reportedly planning bids. Martin Nesbitt, one of the foundation heads, said the Obamas will not do any fundraising for the library while in office and that the organization will disclose all gifts exceeding $200.
