New Head of National-Service Agency Approved by Senate

The U.S. Senate today confirmed Wendy Spencer, a longtime advocate for volunteerism, as chief executive of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
The agency has been without a permanent leader since May, when Patrick Corvington stepped down unexpectedly after 15 months in the role. The corporation oversees AmeriCorps and other national-service programs.
Ms. Spencer comes to the federal agency after leading the Florida Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, which administers AmeriCorps grants in the state and coordinates donations and volunteers after disasters. She has also served as head of Florida’s Park Service and campaign director of the United Way of the Big Bend, in Tallahassee.
Ms. Spencer has worked under three successive Republican governors as head of the Florida group, which has a budget of about $17-million.
Ms. Spencer will oversee a $1-billion budget that pays for AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and other programs to encourage volunteerism and help nonprofits.
