New Institute to Promote Service

March 25, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

A new institute designed to cultivate an interest in philanthropy and volunteerism among college undergraduates is being established at the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy.

The Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service will offer academic courses, internships at non-profit organizations, guest speakers, and a variety of other activities during the summer to 30 college and university students who are considering careers in the non-profit world. The program costs $3,850 per student, but the program offers financial aid to needy students.

The institute was created through a partnership between Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy and the David R. Jones Center on Philanthropy, in Washington.

The Jones Center was itself recently established by the Fund for American Studies, an educational organization that offers summer institutes to college students.

The Jones Center, which is named after a co-founder and former president of the Fund for American Studies, will conduct a variety of programs designed to help shape philanthropy in the next century and educate a new generation of donors.
