New Leader at YWCA USA, New Top Fundraiser at Volunteers of America

YWCA USA
Alejandra Castillo has been named chief executive of the more than 150-year-old organization, which champions social justice. Ms. Castillo was most recently national director of the Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency for the Obama administration.
Ms. Castillo follows interim CEO Casey Harden, who stepped into the role from a senior staff position when Dara Richardson-Heron left the organization in February to become chief engagement officer of the All of Us Research Program. The program, run by the National Institutes of Health, aims to build one of the world’s largest sets of biomedical data.
College Futures Foundation
Monica Lozano, a Rockefeller Foundation board member, has become chief executive of the College Futures Foundation.
St. Helena Hospital Foundation
Susan Dix Lyons, the founder and chief executive of Clinica Verde, which provides medical services and nutrition education for poor women and children in Nicaragua, has been appointed chief executive.
Volunteers of America
Tom Waters, former director of development at United Way Worldwide, will be senior vice president for development at Volunteers of America.
Foundation moves:
Tim Eder, who has served as executive director of the Great Lakes Commission since 2006, has joined the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation as a program officer for the environment. Under Mr. Eder’s direction, Mott’s grants will focus on freshwater issues, particularly within the Great Lakes region.
Jay Kennedy is joining the Duke Endowment as a program officer in health care. Mr. Kennedy previously worked as a rural hospital program manager at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Mandy Chapman Semple has joined the Houston Endowment as director of learning and evaluation. She previously worked at the Corporation for Supportive Housing as the director of local systems transformation.
Other notable appointments:
Jaye Lopez Van Soest, previously a fundraising consultant in Washington, is now director of development for the American Foundation for the Blind.
Colby Reade, a senior account supervisor at the creative agency CMD, will become director of communications at the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust in September.
Departures
Jeffrey Herbst, chief executive of the Newseum, resigned suddenly on Monday, pending a financial review of the journalism museum in Washington. He has been in the role since 2015.
Legacies
Cassidy Karakorn, director of consumer marketing at the Human Rights Campaign, died in a traffic accident in Washington on August 26. She was 38.
