New Orleans Hospital Closure Prompts Protest
March 27, 2006
Doctors, former patients, and preservationists are fighting to reopen Charity Hospital, the nonprofit New Orleans medical center shuttered after its basement flooded following Hurricane Katrina, reports the Associated Press.
While hospital officials say the institution cannot be saved, the protesters are calling for an independent group of architects and engineers to assess the building. The group says it is skeptical of findings by a firm hired by Louisiana State University, which runs the Charity Hospital system.
