New Titles: Executive Director, New York City Ballet

December 3, 2009 | Read Time: 1 minute

Job held by: Katherine E. Brown

Why the job was created: The New York City Ballet, which has a 2010 budget of about $60-million, and which endured layoffs and salary cuts earlier this year, created the executive director role to help “ensure the continued financial strength of the company for the future,” according to Robert Daniels, a spokesman for the organization.

Duties: Ms. Brown, who starts on December 14, will oversee fund raising as well as finances, marketing, publicity strategy, and educational programs. Previously, these areas were overseen by the company’s ballet master in chief, Peter Martins, who will now focus on the group’s artistic programs.

Background of the new leader: Ms. Brown, 55, has most recently served as chief operating officer of WNYC, a public-radio station. She also spent more than a decade at Jazz at Lincoln Center, including a stint as executive director. She also worked as a fund raiser for the New York City Ballet in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
