The new director general of the World Health Organization wants to focus on improving the health of Africans and women throughout the world, two goals that overlap work by some of the world’s largest charity organizations, reports The New York Times.
Margaret F.C. Chan, a former Hong Kong health chief, said Monday that now is the time to capitalize on philanthropy’s attention to health issues in the developing world by strengthening the commitment and resources of governments around the globe, the paper reports.
She cited programs of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations as well as other charities, saying, “Health has never before seen such wealth.”
Dr. Chan pledged to make the World Health Organization more accountable for its programs’ performance.
