New York Ballet Choreographer to Form Company

January 9, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

A 33-year-old resident choreographer at the New York City Ballet has decided to start a new classical dance company, leading to speculation that he will become a giant in the dance world, says The New York Times.

Christopher Wheeldon’s new company—Morphoses, the Wheeldon Company—would have homes in New York and London and is expected to lure new donors, ticket subscribers, and dancers, the paper reports.

“He’s got the momentum,” Jennifer Goodale, the vice president for contributions at Altria Group, one of the most prominent corporate supporters of dance, tells the Times. “He’s got the star power. If anyone can do it, he’s the one. Is it going to shake up the scene a little? Yes, and good for him.”

A key question, observers say, is whether Mr. Wheeldon’s new venture will be able to draw the money needed to run such an institution.
