After a four-year delay, state courts have given the green light to the New York State Health Foundation to begin making grants to poor people who lack health insurance, reports The New York Times.
The state Legislature and Gov. George E. Pataki created the foundation in 2002, but the move was challenged in court. The foundation’s assets have grown from an estimated $50-million to more than $250-million during the delay.
Although the fund has not yet hired any staff members or outlined the particulars of its mission, James R. Knickman, the foundation’s chief executive, says it will begin reviewing grant proposals this month.
