Beneficiary: Broad Foundations

Background: Mr. Broad is founding chairman of KB Home, a homebuilder, and of SunAmerica, a financial-services company.

Mr. Broad, 79, and Edythe Broad, 76, gave $101.5-million to their Broad Foundations, which support civic programs, contemporary-art museums, efforts to improve elementary and secondary public-school education, and medical and scientific research.

Of the grants the foundations awarded last year, the largest included $4.8-million to Michigan Education Excellence Foundation to finance education projects in Michigan (both of the Broads graduated from Detroit’s public schools); $3-million to Success Academy Charter Schools to establish six new schools; and $1.8-million to Teach for America.
