Amount donated in 2012: $50-million

Beneficiary: Swarthmore College

Background: Mr. Lang founded REFAC Technology Development Corporation, a manufacturing and technology-transfer company.

Mr. Lang, 93, pledged $50-million to Swarthmore College for new engineering and science facilities and for programs connecting engineering with the liberal arts.

Mr. Lang graduated from Swarthmore in 1938 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and serves as chair emeritus of Swarthmore’s Board of Managers. [Editor’s note: The previous sentence was changed to show that Mr. Lang is an emeritus member of the board, not chairman of the board.]

Mr. Lang will pay the pledge over the next several years.
