No. 39: Raymond Perelman

Amount donated in 2014: $56-million

Main beneficiary: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Background: Mr. Perelman is president of RGP Holdings, which owns businesses in finance, manufacturing, and mining.

Mr. Perelman, 97, pledged $50-million to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The donation will support a number of pediatric research programs including those at the hospital’s Raymond G. Perelman Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics. It will also create a special fund for new pilot research projects and support general research at the hospital’s Research Institute.

The money will also go toward hiring two new tenure-track pediatric researchers and endow a professorship in pediatric ophthalmology.


The donor also committed $6-million to Drexel University for its new Center for Jewish Life, which will be named for him. The center is expected to open next year.
