Major-Gift Fundraising

No. 40: Arthur and Rebecca Samberg

February 10, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Amount donated in 2013: $50.1-million

Beneficiaries: Columbia Business School and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital

Background: Mr. Samberg founded Pequot Capital Management, a hedge fund.

The Sambergs pledged $25-million to Columbia Business School for its new Manhattanville campus. Mr. Samberg, 73, earned a master’s degree in business administration from Columbia in 1967 and today serves on the school’s Board of Overseers.

The Sambergs also gave the business school $50,000 for financial aid, faculty research, and other programs and donated $5,000 to Columbia University for the medical school.

Not counting their 2013 commitment, the couple has given Columbia at least $35-million since 2006.

In addition, the Sambergs pledged $25-million last year to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital to endow the Samberg Scholars in Children’s Health program, which is recruiting pediatricians.

The Sambergs also gave NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (where Mr. Samberg serves as a trustee) $50,000 for the start of its current fundraising campaign.
