No. 42: Robert and Anne Bass

Amount donated in 2013: $50-million

Beneficiary: Duke University

Background: Mr. Bass founded Aerion Corporation, an aerospace company in Reno, Nev., and is president of Keystone Group, an investment firm in Fort Worth, Tex.

Mr. and Ms. Bass pledged $50-million to establish Bass Connections, a program to encourage interdisciplinary study and collaboration among students and faculty members at Duke. The university must raise $25-million from other donors to get the full sum.

Ms. Bass has served on the university’s Board of Trustees since 2003, and one of the couple’s four children, Christopher, graduated from Duke in 1997.
