Background: Mr. Marron is chairman of Lightyear Capital, a private-equity firm, in New York.

Mr. Marron pledged $40-million to New York University to create the Marron Institute on Cities and the Urban Environment. The institute will sponsor research into ways cities across the globe can become more livable and environmentally sustainable.

The donor serves on the university’s Board of Trustees and is chairman of the new institute’s Advisory Board.
