No. 50: Jack O. and Barbara Bovender

Beneficiary: Duke University

Donors’ background: Mr. Bovender retired in 2009 as chief executive officer of Hospital Corporation of America, in Nashville.

Mr. Bovender, 66, and his wife, Barbara, 68, pledged $25-million to Duke. The Fuqua School of Business’s Health Sector Management Program and the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences will each receive $10-million. The School of Nursing will receive $5-million. The university did not disclose a payment schedule. In addition, the Bovenders donated $1-million to Duke for a variety of programs, which the university also did not disclose.

Mr. Bovender earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1967 and a master’s degree in hospital administration in 1969, both from Duke, where he has been a trustee since 2007. Ms. Bovender was a head nurse at Duke University Hospital.
