Nonprofit Organizations: Principles and Practices
by Thomas P. Holland and Roger A. Ritvo

This book is designed to be a comprehensive “introductory textbook to help prepare the next generation of leaders for the field,” write Thomas P. Holland, a professor and founding director of the Institute for Nonprofit Organizations at the University of Georgia, and Roger A. Ritvo, a professor at Auburn University at Montgomery.

The book describes the nuts and bolts of any nonprofit group, beginning with chapters on the history of nonprofit organizations, ethical issues, and managing nonprofit groups, and ending with subjects like accountability, program evaluation, and fund raising.

The book includes elements to assist classroom instruction, such as questions for group discussion, suggested Web research assignments, and case studies for review and discussion.

For example, in the chapter on ethics, the authors provide case studies of ethical problems that can come up at a nonprofit group, such as dealing with sensitive patient-confidentiality issues at a social-service organization or conflicts of interest among board members.

The book also includes an appendix with examples of bylaws, articles of incorporation, and sexual-harassment policies.
