Nonprofit Groups Are ‘Economic Engine’ in Washington Region, Report Says

The Business of Doing Good in Greater Washington: How the Nonprofit Sector Contributes to the Region’s Economyassesses the economic impact of nonprofit organizations in the Washington, D.C., area. Conducted with support from the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation and America Online, the study found that nonprofit groups are a powerful force in the region’s economy, employing more than 218,000 workers who earned $9.6-billion in wages in 2003. The report also says that 1,682 nonprofit organizations were formed between 1995 and 2000, a 28-percent increase.
