Nonprofit Groups Urged to Fire Poor Workers

Nonprofit groups should be more willing to get rid of workers who do a bad job, writes an anonymous blogger on the GiveWell Blog
All of the writers on the site are anonymous; the founders of GiveWell say they are “people who are unaffiliated with any nonprofit organization, but interested in donating to the best ones.”
A former nonprofit employee who calls himself MichiganBob wrote the posting on firing charity workers. He says that too many nonprofit groups retain ineffective employees simply because “they have their hearts in the right place.”
In turn, they are rewarding substandard work — and producing substandard results.
To be more effective, the writer says nonprofit groups have to become more aggressive in their evaluation of employees.
“Spending money wisely includes making sure that your employees are as good as they can be, and that is only accomplished through honest and fair evaluation – sometimes that means firing people,” he writes. “So make sure you’re asking this question. And executive directors, have the heart to fire anyone who isn’t the best person for the job.”
