Nonprofit Hospital Faces Tax-Exemption Limbo

Provena Covenant Medical Center, in Urbana, Ill., is facing a financial crisis after being required to pay $6-million in property-tax bills that date back to 2003, when the organization’s tax-exempt status was questioned, reports the Chicago Tribune. Three years ago the Champaign County Board of Review recommended the state deny the hospital nonprofit status, saying the medical institution used aggressive tactics to collect money from poor and uninsured patients. The hospital has appealed to have its charity status restored but is still awaiting a ruling.
