American Express NGen Fellows Program

Sponsors: American Express Foundation and Independent Sector

Who’s eligible: Emerging nonprofit leaders under 40 who work at organizations that are members of Independent Sector.

Cost to participants: Fellows must arrange their own travel and lodging for the 10-month program’s three in-person events. A small travel stipend may be provided for out-of-state fellows as needed.

Annie E. Casey Foundation Children and Family Fellowship

Who’s eligible: Senior leaders who oversee large government agencies, nonprofit social-service groups, or advocacy projects that serve children, families, and communities.

Ashoka Fellows

Who’s eligible: Social entrepreneurs who meet five criteria (a new idea, creativity, entrepreneurial quality, social impact of the idea, and “ethical fiber”).

Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs

Sponsor: Coro

Who’s eligible: People from a variety of backgrounds, but with a commitment to civic engagement.

Cost to participants: $3,500 to $5,000; need-based stipends are available.

Echoing Green Fellowships

Sponsor: Echoing Green

Who’s eligible: Applicants who are starting their own nonprofits and have not affiliated under any other existing organization.

Cost to participants: Free. Fellows are given $80,000 over two years, a $4,000 health-insurance stipend, and a $1,000 yearly professional stipend.

Executive Directors Leadership Program

Sponsor: Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP)

Who’s eligible: Asian and Pacific Islander executive directors of nonprofit organizations who have less than seven to eight years of experience in their leadership roles. Applicants are not required to lead an organization focused exclusively on Asian-American or Pacific Islander issues.

Cost to participants: $500 to $800, on a sliding scale based on an organization’s size and budget.

Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders

Sponsor: Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business

Who’s eligible: Nonprofit leaders in social and human services, health care, community development, and education organizations interested in advancing their careers.

Cost to participants: $4,800 to $11,200, on a sliding scale based on an organization’s size and budget.

Ford Motor Company International Fellowship Program of the 92nd Street Y

Sponsors: Ford Motor Company and the 92nd Street Y

Who’s eligible: For 2014, applicants must live and work in the following countries: Brazil, China, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, India, Israel, Myanmar, Puerto Rico, the Russian Federation, Senegal, or Turkey. Applicants must be community leaders who either work or volunteer at a nonprofit organization, who are “successfully addressing issues that affect the community’s well-being,” and who would benefit from the intensive, three-week nonprofit management training course in New York. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have regular online access, a current passport, and fluency in English.

Cost to participants: Free. Expenses, including travel, are covered, and fellows also receive a stipend.

LGBT Movement Leaders Fellowship

Sponsors: The Gay & Lesbian Victory Institute and LTR Lewis Cloverdale Foundation

Who’s eligible: Executive directors of nonprofits that serve or advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) people to participate in Duke University’s Nonprofit Management and Executive Leadership programs. Applicants must be seeking to expand their management skills, have held their position for at least a year, and be committed to staying at the nonprofit for at least six months after the fellowship. They must lead organizations with budgets of $350,000 to $5-million, and supervise a minimum of two full-time employees.

Cost to participants: Free, but in return participants must participate in the LGBT Leaders 2013 conference in Denver.

To apply: Applicants must apply both to Duke University’s nonprofit management certificate program and to the Victory Institute.

Leaders Common Ground Program

Sponsor: Rutgers Institute for Ethical Leadership

Who’s eligible: Nonprofit professionals at any stage of their careers who seek a supportive forum to discuss the challenges of their work.

Cost to participants: $2,100.

Neighborhood Builders

Sponsor: Bank of America

Who’s eligible: Nonprofits that work in community development, work force development, and education.

Cost to participants: Free. Organization receives a $200,000 grant from Bank of America; the nonprofit’s executive and one staff member receive leadership training.

To apply: Application is by invitation only.

Deadline for applications: Nominations are made during the summer.



Nonprofit Executive Leadership Fellows Program

Sponsors: Prudential Foundation and Rutgers Institute for Ethical Leadership

Who’s eligible: Executive directors and senior leadership in nonprofits that are also grant recipients of the Prudential Foundation. Applicants must send a letter of support from their organization’s board of directors.

Cost to participants: $200.

Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program

Sponsor: Rutgers Institute for Ethical Leadership

Who’s eligible: Nonprofit workers from around the country interested in one of two tracks available for executives and emerging leaders.

Cost to participants: $1,500; scholarships are available.

Deadline for applications: No firm deadline, though the fall 2013 program is expected to be full by mid-September.



Princeton Alumni Corps Emerging Leaders

Sponsor: Princeton Alumni Corps

Who’s eligible: People currently employed in the nonprofit field who have two to eight years of work experience, including at least one year at a nonprofit; who have project-management responsibilities; and who work either in the Greater Washington area or in New York City.

Cost to participants: $500, plus a $30 application fee.

Proteus Fund Diversity Fellowship

Sponsor: Proteus Fund

Who’s eligible: Minorities interested in preparing for a career at a foundation who hold a bachelor’s degree and also have five years of work experience at nonprofits or companies, or a master’s degree and three years of experience working at nonprofits or companies.

Cost to participants: Free. Fellows receive a $45,000 stipend, along with eligibility for Proteus’ health insurance.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leaders

Sponsor: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Who’s eligible: Mid-career community health-care leaders and advocates who have a three- to 10-year record of accomplishment in the field of community health and have not received significant national recognition for their work. Applicants must work for a public or charitable organization and must be American citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its territories.

Cost to participants: Free. Each year, 10 participants get awards of $125,000 each ($20,000 directly to support the participant’s personal development and $105,000 to support a defined project at his or her organization).

Rockwood Leadership Institute

Sponsor: Rockwood Leadership Institute, though certain programs may have additional sponsors

Who’s eligible: Each of the eight programs Rockwood runs has its own requirements, though most focus on people who work for social-change organizations.

Cost to participants: Varies. For the Art of Leadership, for instance, cost ranges from $500 to $4,000, on a sliding scale based on an organization’s annual budget.

Selah Leadership Program

Sponsors: Bend the Arc and Nathan Cummings Foundation

Who’s eligible: People with a “religious, cultural, or other Jewish identity” who have at least seven years of experience in the social-justice field; who hold a “position of influence” in an organization; and whose job requires collaboration with or supervision of personnel. Applicants may work for a non-Jewish or secular social-change organization.

Cost to participants: $600 to $1,500, on a sliding scale based on an organization’s annual budget.

Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management

Sponsor: Harvard Business School Social Enterprise Initiative

Who’s eligible: Nonprofit chief executives who are responsible for the strategic direction of their organizations. Program participants must be nominated and sponsored by their current employer.

Cost to participants: $5,000; scholarships may be available on a limited basis.

To apply: Go to the Harvard Business School executive education Web site.

Deadline for applications: Four weeks before the program start date of July 14, 2013.



21st Century Fellows Program

Sponsor: The Pipeline Project

Who’s eligible: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered (LGBT) people of color who are currently managers at human-rights, service, and advocacy organizations, with an emphasis on those working at LGBT organizations.

Cost to participants: Free.

Victoria Foundation Nonprofit Emerging Leaders Program

Sponsors: Rutgers Institute for Ethical Leadership and Victoria Foundation

Who’s eligible: Mid-level and emerging nonprofit professionals whose organizations are grant recipients of the Victoria Foundation. Applicants must send a letter of support from their organization’s board of directors.

Youth Justice Leadership Institute

Sponsor: National Juvenile Justice Network

Who’s eligible: Young minority professionals in the continental United States who have a demonstrated commitment to reform the juvenile justice system and who are affiliated with an organization that works in that field.

Cost to participants: $100 to $330, on a sliding scale based on annual income; scholarships are available.
