Nonprofit Newsrooms Raise Visibility and Find Sustainability

The proliferation and higher profile of web-based, nonprofit journalism outlets suggests growing confidence in philanthropically supported digital publications and their place in the long-term media landscape, writes Capital New York.
Ambitious start-ups like the Marshall Project, co-led by former New York Times executive editor Bill Keller, and recent Pulitzer Prizes for nonprofit newsrooms have significantly raised the sector’s visibility.
All but nine states have at least one nonprofit news outlet. Big digital newsrooms like The Texas Tribune are reducing their reliance on foundation funding, the chief source of launch support for nonprofit journalism organizations, and even smaller organizations are developing different revenue streams and hiring development directors.
