Nonprofit Veteran With Familiar Name Seeks Ga. Senate Seat

January 27, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The New York Times reports on longtime nonprofit executive Michelle Nunn’s campaign for U.S. Senate in Georgia, the state her father represented in Washington for 24 years.

As did former Sen. Sam Nunn, Ms. Nunn is positioning herself as a centrist Democrat, and some party officials believe Georgia’s changing demographics—and the candidate’s famous name—can propel a Democrat to victory in a state that has leaned Republican in recent years but is now seeing an influx of African-American, Latino, and Asian voters.

Ms. Nunn grew up in the Washington area during her father’s congressional tenure but settled in Atlanta in 1989 and was hired to lead community-service group Hands on Atlanta, which later merged with national volunteer network Points of Light. She stepped down as Hands on Atlanta’s chief executive in July, when she launched her run for the seat being vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
