Nonprofits Need to Boost Digital-Strategy Efforts, Report Says

April 5, 2016 | Read Time: 1 minute

Title: 2016 Digital Outlook Report: Nonprofit Trends and Strategy

Organizations: Care2, HJC New Media, NTEN, Resource Alliance, and Xtraordinary Integrated Fundraising.

Summary: Only 61 percent of nonprofits have at least one staff member dedicated solely to digital strategy, and just 52.1 percent have a team of at least two, according to the report.

Many nonprofits don’t have enough staff members dedicated to running such programs, and many of those that do have digital teams haven’t integrated all of their departments’ digital efforts.

The survey was sent worldwide, although most of the respondents were in the United States and Canada.

Other findings:

  • Nearly half of those polled said they plan to invest more of their budget in social-media promotion and communications this year.
  • Most respondents said their groups plan to spend only 10 to 20 percent of their fundraising budget for digital strategy next year.
  • Because environmental and health-related groups are generally smaller, their communications, development, and marketing departments tend to be part of the same team. So those groups are more likely to have a digital-strategy team than social-service nonprofits or hospitals.
