Nonprofits Win Awards for Activism and Sharing News

May 5, 2011 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Public Broadcasting Service was among many nonprofits that earned top prizes for online efforts in this year’s Webby Awards.

The awards, which seek to honor the best Internet offers, are actually two sets of prizes. The first are “People’s Voice” awards that are based on a public vote. Nominees in each category can also win awards based on a review by Internet experts.

For “best nonprofit Web site,” PBS was the People’s Voice winner, while Historypin, a mapping project that seeks to connect people of different generations, won the judge’s award. Historypin was created by Wearewhatdo, a nonprofit effort to designed to make it easy for people find ways to help others each day.

Avaaz.org, which focuses on issues such as poverty, corruption, and climate change, won the People’s Voice award for best Web site on activism. Avaaz is the word for voice in several languages.

And the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation won in the best video-activism category with “The Time to Eliminate Pediatric AIDS is Now.” (The video can be seen below.)

In a year when many organizations scrambled to expand their online presentations to include sharing information on tablet devices, PBS also received an award for its iPad app in the category of Entertainment—Tablet and All Other Devices.
